NATIONAL

Ministry of WCD holds National Consultation on Child Protection

The Ministry of Women and Child Development organised National Consultation on Child Protection in New Delhi.The conference deliberated on the Juvenile Justice (Care and protection of Children) Act, 2015 and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO) 2012.

The first part of the National Consultation focused on deliberations with regard to JJ Act, 2015 and POCSO Act, 2012, Trackchild, Childline (1098).

The Ministry of Women and Child Development is implementing various laws and schemes viz Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act 2015, the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act 2012 (POCSO) Act and Child Protection Services (CPS).


Government announces Rs 8000 crore Package to Sugar Mills

The Union government has announced a package of more than Rs 8,000 crore aimed to provide relief to sugarcane farmers and to clear their dues.

A buffer stock of 30 LMT (lakh metric tonnes) of sugar will be created with Rs 1,200 crore.

According to statistics from Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy, sugarcane production in 2017-18 was the third highest ever in the country at 35.5 million tonnes.


 India among top five countries in e-waste generation: Study

According to  ASSOCHAM-NEC, India is among the top five countries in generating e-waste. The other countries topping the chart of e-waste generation are China, USA, Japan and Germany.

In India, Maharashtra contributes the largest e-waste of 19.8 per cent.

E-waste generated in India is about 2 million TPA, the quantity that is recycled is about 438,085 TPA.

E-waste typically includes discarded computer monitors, motherboards, Cathode Ray Tubes (CRT), Printed Circuit Board (PCB), mobile phones and chargers, compact discs, headphones etc,.


Uttarakhand: Polythene to be completely prohibited from 31st July

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat announced that there would be a complete ban on use of polythene throughout the state from July 31. The theme for this year’s World Environment Day is beat plastic pollution.

All polythene wholesalers have been asked to exhaust their stocks by the given date and sought people’s cooperation to make Uttarakhand free of plastic.

A massive tree plantation drive will be launched along the Rispana river next month to rejuvenate it. As part of a mission called Rispana to Rishiparna, the ancient name of the river, 3.5 lakh trees will be planted.


Prasar Bharati signs MoU with I&B ministry for release of funds

The Information and Broadcasting Ministry and Prasar Bharati, which runs Doordarshan and All India Radio (AIR), have inked an MoU required for the release of financial allocation to the broadcaster.

Besides Prasar Bharati, the ministry has also signed MoUs with Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC), Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) and Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute.

The ministry releases an amount of around Rs 200 crore to Prasar Bharati every month.

INTERNATIONAL

Japanese Passport ranked most Powerful in the World

According to Henley Passport Index, Japan has the “most powerful” passport in the world. India is in 76th Position.

Tokyo offers its citizens visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to a record 189 destinations.

The second rank is shared by Singapore and China, with 188 destinations accessible without a prior visa. Third place is shared by six countries: South Korea, Finland, France, Italy, Spain, and Sweden.


BANKING AND ECONOMY

Repo Rate Increased By 25 bps in Second Bi-monthly Monetary Policy

The Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) of Reserve Bank of India has increased the policy Repo Rate under the liquidity adjustment facility (LAF) by 25 basis points to 6.25 percent in the Second Bi-monthly Monetary Policy Statement (2018-19).

Then, the reverse repo rate under the LAF stands adjusted to 6.0 percent, and the marginal standing facility (MSF) rate and the Bank Rate to 6.50 percent.

The MPC revised CPI inflation for 2018-19 to 4.8-4.9% in the first half and 4.7% in the second half. The MPC stated that the GDP growth rate for 2018-19 is retained at 7.4 percent.


Microsoft acquires Github for $7.5bn

Microsoft has agreed to acquire GitHub, a code sharing platform for software developers, in a $7.5bn deal.

GitHub was founded a decade ago in San Francisco as a tool that allows software developers to store, share and collaborate on their work.

Microsoft Corporate Vice President Nat Friedman, founder of Xamarin will assume the role of GitHub CEO.


APPOINTMENTS

Pippa Harris appointed as the new chairperson of BAFTA

Veteran producer Pippa Harris has been appointed as the new chairman of British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA).

She has been the deputy chair for the past year and closely involved with the British Academy for a decade. Her tenure will last for two years.

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts or BAFTA Film Awards are presented in an annual award show hosted by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts to honour the best British and international contributions to film.


Malaysia appoints an Indian as new Attorney General

Malaysia’s king Sultan Muhammad V has approved the appointment of an ethnic Indian lawyer as the new attorney general.

Sultan Muhammad V has terminated the current Attorney General Mohamad Apandi Ali and replacing him with Tommy Thomas.

Thomas is the first non-Malay to take the post of attorney general since Malaysia was formed in 1963.

Ecuador’s Foreign Minister elected UN General Assembly President

The Ecuadorean Foreign Minister Maria Fernanda Espinosa has been elected as the president of the 73rd United Nations General Assembly.

She will assume the position in September at the start of the 73rd UN General Assembly and she will be replacing Slovakian Foreign Affairs Minister Miroslav Lajcak.

Dhiraj Ram Krishna receives ‘National Gopal Ratna’ award

Dhiraj Ram Krishna has received the ‘National Gopal Ratna’ award from Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Radha Mohan Singh in New Delhi for ‘upkeep of the best dairy animals of indigenous breeds’.

The ‘National Gopal Ratna’ award has encouraged him to achieve the target and given ₹ 5 lakh, which he plans to invest for expanding the business.


Parliamentary Standing Committee gets Sansad Ratna Award

The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Finance will be awarded the Sansad Ratna Award 2018 for its outstanding performance.

Veerappa Moily, Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Finance will receive the award at a function to be held in Indian Institute of Technology-Madras. This is the only award on behalf of the civil society to honour achievers in Parliament, Srinivasan added.

These awards were instituted by Prime Point Foundation in 2010 based on the suggestion given by late President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam to celebrate achievers.

Cricket Australia CEO James Sutherland to step down

The Long-serving Cricket Australia boss James Sutherland has stepped down as chief executive.

The 52-year-old, who took up the role in 2001, resigns amid cultural reviews into the cricket board and the national team in the wake of the Cape Town scandal.


French Open: Nadal earns 900th win

The world No.1 Rafael Nadal of Spain has defeated Maximilian Marterer of Germany earning his career’s 900th win and advancing to the French Open quarter-finals.

The 10-time French Open champion got his 224th Grand Slam win, surpassing Jimmy Connors of the US, but is still far behind record holder Roger Federer of Switzerland (332) and second-placed Novak Djokovic of Serbia (244).


OBITUARY

Senior Journalist Leela Menon passed away

Leela Menon, a pioneering journalist and the chief editor of Malayalam newspaper ‘Janmabhumi’ has passed away.

Menon began her journalistic career with The Indian Express in New Delhi in 1978. she started writing columns for ‘The Hindu’, ‘Outlook’ and ‘Madhyamam’ before she joined ‘Janmabhumi’ as its chief editor.
